WHEN BAE HAS KISSABLE LIPS

Late October

I’m at a party. The first one I’ve ever gone to where there’s drinking involved and I’m…

Drinking too.

Look, I hang out with “good girls.” My friend group, we don’t do drugs and we don’t really drink. Other people do it and that’s fine. I also don’t judge. Neither do my friends. If you want to go to a party and get high and do a bunch of shots, cool. You do you.

That’s not my normal style.

Until tonight. It’s Saturday night and Eddie Devito is having a party. He just moved into our area a year ago and everyone loves Eddie. He’s fun, he’s funny, he’s attractive, the guys like him, the girls love him…

So when Eddie throws a party, everyone shows up. Everyone.

Including me and my friends.

And when Eddie shoves a can of beer into my hands and says, “Drink up,” I do it.

Even though it tastes kind of horrible.

“Beer is gross,” Emma says as we wander around the house.

“You took the words right out of my mouth,” I say as I take another swig.

Ew.

Yet I keep drinking it.

“Where’s Jonah?” Emma asks, referring to my boyfriend.

Yes. Jonah and I made it official a couple of weeks ago, and things are going great. Except for one tiny problem. One I can’t admit to anyone. Not Emma, not Tori, and especially not Jonah.

Crap, I can barely admit it to myself.

But here we go:

When Jonah and I kiss, sometimes I imagine he’s…

Beck Callahan.

Totally wrong. Like seriously, what is my problem? Why do I fantasize about kissing Beck? Whyyyyyyy…

Oh, maybe it’s because he has the most kissable looking lips on the planet. His mouth is just…perfection. His lips are full and lush and almost…beautiful. I’ve seen him kiss Sasha, his girlfriend, and it fills me with this weird, twisted feeling in my gut that I’ve never really experienced before. At least, not so intensely.

Pretty sure it’s just a serious case of jealousy.

“Jonah is at a band competition out of town,” I answer, trying to focus on my boyfriend. Jonah and I are both busy. Him with band, me with volleyball. Our marching band participates in various band competitions every fall, and Jonah is at them most Saturday nights through the month of October. It seriously eats into his social life. He’s not the type of boyfriend who wants me to stay home when he’s not around, thank goodness. Though I do think he wishes he was here with me.

Emma sets her beer can on a nearby table. We’ve walked outside and we’re in Eddie Devito’s back yard, where there’s a swarm of people. Most of them I know. Some I don’t even recognize. There’s loud music playing and so many voices talking, it mixes together into indecipherable noise.

This is probably the biggest party I’ve been to yet, and there’s something in the air tonight. Something I can’t quite explain.

But I feel it, lifting me up, filling me with excitement.

“I can’t drink that stuff,” Emma says, her voice screwed up in disgust as her gaze drops to the beer in my hand.
